Axel

History

Axel came from a breeder in Jacksonville, Oregon in March of 2007. In May of 2006, Wild Spirit picked up a litter of six pups, Alice, Powder, Sabine, Sugar, Storm, and Thunder, from the breeder and arrangements were made to pick up their parents, Yukon and Sierra, as well. It wasn't until March of 2007 that Leyton and Angel were able to make the trek to pick up the pair, as well as Axel, the six pups' older brother. While Yukon and Axel were neutered before ever setting foot on the Sanctuary property, Sierra had already become impregnated, and so that May, she gave birth to a litter of five Arctic pups: Flurry, Frost, Shasta, Teton, and Trinity.

How Can I Help Axel?

Animal Sponsorships

It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.

Quarterly Enrichment
Every three months we give each of our animals an exciting enrichment treat. Not only does it help to mentally and physically stimulate the wolves and wolf-dogs, but it also goes to support them for the rest of the quarter.

Profile

Bio: Axel is an Arctic wolf mixed with a little bit of Timber wolf. Axel is the big brother to nine different animals at the Sanctuary: Alice, Powder, Sabine, Storm, Sugar, Thunder and Flurry, Shasta, and Teton. Both of his parents passed away - his mother Sierra, when Axel was three years old, and his father, Yukon, a little over two years later. One of his younger siblings, Trinity, passed away when Axel was four years old, and Frost when Axel was almost six years old.
Living Arrangements: Axel lives with an Arctic wolf, Riot.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, but I can be extremely shy around large groups and will hide in the back. Otherwise, I'm usually lying underneath one of the trees."
Personality: Axel is a bit of an interesting fellow - when he lived at the breeder's, he had been a very dominant and somewhat aggressive animal. Once he arrived at Wild Spirit, he became very timid. Now, he is much more social, coming over for scratches and attention. Unfortunately, his girlfriend, Riot, wants to hog the caretaker for herself, and the two often engage in a dominance ritual. Despite their differences over visitors, Axel and Riot have a sweet relationship.
Likes: Playing "tag" with caretakers, fence-fighting with his neighbor Powder Pack, and digging in his water bucket on a hot day.
Dislikes: Riot getting attention from caretakers he is nervous of, large crowds near his enclosure, and Powder Pack getting fed first.
Fun Fact: Poor Axel - before his current companion, Riot, he always lived with an animal old enough to be his grandmother! It's no wonder why that with Riot, he tries so hard to play with her!
My Wishlist: "Safety always comes first, and although there is no chance for me to get out of my enclosure, it would be great if we could get some topwire to line the top of my enclosure."
