Azteca

History

In the middle of August of 2009, we received an email about five wolf-dogs living at Raven Woods Animal Shelter in Roseland, Louisiana. This family of wolf-dogs was surrendered to the shelter when they were young pups. While a few were adopted out to homes, they were eventually returned, and due to their wolf heritage, the shelter felt uncomfortable adopting them out to homes again. Sadly, while the shelter's owner kept their enclosure clean, and the wolf-dogs fed, watered and healthy, they lived almost two years of their lives in a 10 ft by 10 ft pen with a concrete floor. On the way back from visiting family in Pennsylvania, Brennan and Angel went down to visit a good friend of theirs in New Orleans, and stopped by Raven Woods to visit with the shelter's manager, John, and the wolf-dogs. While none of the littermates were very high-content, it was obvious that the five needed a better situation. We decided to accept the litter, and two months later, Brennan and Angel hit the road again to pick up the five wolf-dogs.

How Can I Help Azteca?

Animal Sponsorships

It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.

Quarterly Enrichment
Every three months we give each of our animals an exciting enrichment treat. Not only does it help to mentally and physically stimulate the wolves and wolf-dogs, but it also goes to support them for the rest of the quarter.

Profile

Bio: Azteca is a low-content wolf-dog, possibly mixed with Malamute and German Shepherd.
Living Arrangements: Azteca lives with her four siblings in an enclosure: Goldie, Juno, Katrina, and Saint.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, and if I'm feeling brave, will run to the front of the fence with my siblings to get a better look."
Personality: Azteca acts like the middle child - she is not as brave as Saint or Katrina, but not as shy as Juno or Goldie. She is becoming more comfortable as time passes, and she will now approach for gentle scratches. Azteca feels much braver when her siblings are around and if everyone is together in a large group, she becomes more willing to investigate strange objects or people in her enclosure.
Likes: Picking on Juno, breakfast time, and tennis balls.
Dislikes: Too many volunteers around her enclosure, her siblings getting all the attention, and loud noises.
Fun Fact: When the New Orleans Kids first arrived, we had trouble telling apart Azteca and Katrina before we knew their personality. Finally, after looking through photographs, we noticed that Katrina has spots on her cheeks that Azteca lacks. Now, it is extremely easy to tell apart the two from a distance.
My Wishlist: "I love to play with my siblings, but it would be nice if I could have my own toy. Perhaps a Kong and some peanut butter to stuff it with? That would be so cool!"
