History
In the middle of August of 2009, we received an email about five wolf-dogs living at Raven Woods Animal Shelter in Roseland, Louisiana. This family of wolf-dogs was surrendered to the shelter when they were young pups. While a few were adopted out to homes, they were eventually returned, and due to their wolf heritage, the shelter felt uncomfortable adopting them out to homes again. Sadly, while the shelter's owner kept their enclosure clean, and the wolf-dogs fed, watered and healthy, they lived almost two years of their lives in a 10 ft by 10 ft pen with a concrete floor. On the way back from visiting family in Pennsylvania, Brennan and Angel went down to visit a good friend of theirs in New Orleans, and stopped by Raven Woods to visit with the shelter's manager, John, and the wolf-dogs. While none of the littermates were very high-content, it was obvious that the five needed a better situation. We decided to accept the litter, and two months later, Brennan and Angel hit the road again to pick up the five wolf-dogs.
How Can I Help Katrina?
It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.
Profile
Bio: Katrina is a low-content wolf-dog, possibly mixed with Malamute and German Shepherd.
Living Arrangements: Katrina lives with her four siblings in an enclosure: Azteca, Goldie, Juno, and Saint.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, and if I'm feeling brave, will run to the front of the fence with my siblings to get a better look."
Personality: Katrina is the most social of the girls and seems to be full of energy. Her spunky personality pushes her to approach caretakers and initiate play with her other siblings. Katrina's favorite game is dashing up to a volunteer, touching them slightly with her nose, and then run off at full speed. She is also the meanest to her sister, Goldie, and doesn't hesitate to use Goldie's timidity to her advantage.
Likes: Picking on Goldie, playing wrestle, and chasing toys.
Dislikes: Her other siblings getting all of the attention, her penmates stealing her food, and Saint when he's in a "mood".
Fun Fact: We typically do not change the names of the animals that come to the Sanctuary. Many times, they recognize their name and it might too confusing for us to change it. However, in Katrina's case, she came with the name Dakota. We had to change it for our own sanity - we already have a Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota. After a discussion with the group of volunteers, it was decided to change her name to Katrina.
My Wishlist: "My family is lucky enough to have a pond in our enclosure, but it can still get hot during summertime. If we had misters on our fence, it would help us to keep cool while watching passing activities."
