History
Lani came to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary because of her strong attachment to her companion, Nakota. While we were busy making arrangements to travel to Oregon and pick up two wolves, Sierra and Yukon, a woman named Missy was persistently calling us in hopes that we would rescue Nakota, an animal that had been in her care many years ago. Nakota went through several different homes, and ended up in a county in Oregon where it was illegal to own a wolf-dog. After many problems brought him to the attention of authorities, his current owner was given a week to either find him new placement or have him euthanized. Missy's persistence, passion, and cooperativeness encouraged us, and since we had the room, we decided to accept Nakota along with his mate, Lani, if their owner would meet us in Medford where we were picking up Sierra and Yukon.
How Can I Help Lani?
It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.
Profile
Bio: Lani is a low-content wolf-dog, possibly a pure dog mixed with Malamute and German Shepherd.
Living Arrangements: Lani still lives with her long-time companion, Nakota.
Am I On the Tour Path? "No, I live at the back of the Sanctuary. However, if you are a sponsor of mine and would like to say hello, ask someone in the office if you can come up for a visit."
Personality: Lani is extremely playful and friendly, although she can be skittish around new people or in new environments. Lani can be a bit bossy, especially towards Nakota, and never hesitates to put him in his place if he is getting too pushy. Lani feels she has to be in charge of the upper compound and picks fights with all of her neighbors, as well as with animals that walk past her enclosure on a walk.
Likes: Toys, sitting in caretakers' laps, and playing chase.
Dislikes: Too many strangers around her enclosure, Nakota when he tries to be in charge, and her neighbor Dusty.
Fun Fact: We typically do not change an animal's name, but in Lani's case, we made a slight alteration to make it easier to remember and pronounce. She used to be named Kaelani, but it was decided to shorten it to just Lani.
My Wishlist: "Currently, my enclosure does not have any shelter. This isn't a big deal - both Nakota and I have plenty of trees to bury ourselves under, but it would be wonderful if we could have a cave house built in our enclosure."
