Maki

History

Maki came to Wild Spirit from the Richard E. Flauto Wildlife Foundation in 2006. The director of the facility, Tiffany, had basically inherited the organization and after many attempts, decided that she simply could not continue. She sent out a plea to other wolf sanctuaries in the hopes that we could offer some help. We agreed to take Maki and her aunt, Kamia. Maki had a rough start at Wild Spirit. Maki and Kamia were originally placed both placed in a beautiful enclosure with Cheyenne, a male wolf-dog who had recently arrived at the Sanctuary. Cheyenne died to gastric torsion in late summer of 2006, leaving Kamia and Maki with strong dynamic shifts and aggression that ended in a severe argument. Maki and Kamia were separated, and only a few weeks later, Kamia passed away from unrelated issues.

How Can I Help Maki?

Animal Sponsorships

It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.

Quarterly Enrichment
Every three months we give each of our animals an exciting enrichment treat. Not only does it help to mentally and physically stimulate the wolves and wolf-dogs, but it also goes to support them for the rest of the quarter.

Profile

Bio: Maki is a Timber wolf. Her aunt, Kamia, passed away in fall of 2006.
Living Arrangements: Maki lives a high-content wolf-dog, Nikki.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, but I don't like strangers and will probably not approach the fence. Most of the times, you can see my sleeping near the middle of my enclosure."
Personality: At her previous home, Maki was a very loving, playful animal. When she moved to the Sanctuary, she grew more timid, and after being placed with Nikki, has become even shyer due to her companion's difficult nature. There still are a few individuals that Maki will warm towards and revert back to her playful self. Generally, Maki keeps to herself but every now and then, Nikki can pull her out of her shell.
Likes: Enrichment items, belly rubs from volunteers she trusts, and howling with gossip.
Dislikes: Nikki when he is being difficult or annoying, scary volunteers near her enclosure, and her food getting stolen.
Fun Fact: After her fight with Kamia, Maki sustained a minor injury to her eye. Her eyelid was torn and sometimes leaks to this day, but luckily, it doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest.
My Wishlist: "Oh Nikki...he can be such a handful sometimes! He constantly splashes the water out of our water bucket and usually breaks it in the process. Please, can someone donate more large metal water buckets? So I can have water that doesn't taste like Nikki's paws?"
