History
Oscar and his brother, Zeus, came to Wild Spirit in June of 2004 as boarding animals when their owner was desperate for a place to keep them until he could relocate. Oscar and Zeus had been well-cared for and their owner had made every attempt to protect them from normal problems wolf-dogs experience. However, even with all of his efforts, he was unable to avoid problems. When a neighbor's daughter was doing a school project on wolves, the mother asked the brothers' owner if it would be okay for her daughter to take a photo with his wolf-dogs. The owner expressed his concern that this was not a good idea and refused. The mother then took it upon herself to lift her daughter over the fence into the enclosure. Zeus was over-excited, jumped on the girl, and an injury was sustained when part of the girl's face was torn. While no one is sure what took place, speculation on the nature of the injury and Zeus' personality, it is guessed that during the excitement, either one of Zeus' canines or dew claw got caught on the girl's lip, and when she was pulled from the enclosure, it had snagged and tore part of her face. Whatever the incident, when a wolf-dog is involved, execution is the usual result. Thus, the owner made every attempt to remove Zeus from the property as quickly as possible. Oscar and Zeus came to Wild Spirit with the intention of simply boarding until the owner could move to a new property. The boys were left at Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, and no further contact was made from the owner. After more than two years, the Sanctuary took responsibility of their permanent care.
How Can I Help Oscar?
It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.
Profile
Bio: Oscar is a mid-content wolf-dog. His brother, Zeus, passed away during fall of 2009.
Living Arrangements: Oscar lives with his long-time admirer, Luna.
Am I On the Tour Path? "No, I live at the back of the Sanctuary. However, if you are a sponsor of mine and would like to say hello, ask someone in the office if you can come up for a visit."
Personality: Oscar is THE definition of a gentle giant. The largest animal at the Sanctuary, Oscar enjoys nothing more than to receive attention from his caretaker. Anyone who stops loving on Oscar will get a firm smack from his paw as a reminder to continue the scratches. Overall, Oscar is a very calm boy.
Likes: Trying to walk between peoples legs, going for walks, and fence-fighting with neighbors.
Dislikes: His penmate stealing all the attention, Leyton, and volunteers walking by his enclosure with leashes and not stopping.
Fun Fact: Oscar is one of the largest animals at the Sanctuary. On average, he weighs around 150lbs. However, that doesn't stop him from leaping straight up into the air when he sees a caretaker with a leash walking his way! He loves his walks so much, he manages to propel all 150lbs of him off the ground, usually right into the arms of his very shocked caretaker!
My Wishlist: "I'm a big man so there is lots of pressure on my joints. It would be great if someone could donate bottles of Joint Discovery, a vitamin that helps joint support."
