Powder

History

Powder came to Wild Spirit on May 23rd, 2006, with his five siblings: Alice, Sugar, Sabine, Thunder, and Storm. His parents (Yukon and Sierra) and older brother, Axel, joined him in early March of 2007. Sierra came to the Sanctuary pregnant, and so, on May 8th, 2007, Powder's family was expanded by the birth of five pups: Frost, Flurry, Teton, Shasta, and Trinity. The Arctic family came from a breeder in Oregon, after the Sanctuary had sought out one or two pups to be raised as ambassadors. A friend told us that there was a breeder in Jacksonville, Oregon who may be willing to donate two pups of a recently born litter. A few days before Leyton, Georgia, and 4-year-old Lakota hopped into the car to pick up the pups, the breeder told us to plan on taking all six, as his previous buyers had decided not to purchase the pups. Excited to have the whole litter, the Cougar family picked up the pups and bottle-fed them the whole way back to New Mexico. Powder was bottle-raised at Wild Spirit. While the other four spent most of their nights in the Animal Care office with Angel, Powder and Sugar spent most of their nights at home with the Cougar Family.

How Can I Help Powder?

Animal Sponsorships

It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.

Quarterly Enrichment
Every three months we give each of our animals an exciting enrichment treat. Not only does it help to mentally and physically stimulate the wolves and wolf-dogs, but it also goes to support them for the rest of the quarter.

Profile

Bio: Powder is an Arctic wolf mixed with a little bit of Timber wolf. Powder has five other littermates living at the Sanctuary: Alice, Thunder, Sugar, Sabine, and Storm. Both of his parents passed away - his father, Sierra, when Powder was a year old, and his father, Yukon, a little over two years later. Powder also has his older brother, Axel, and his younger siblings (Teton, Shasta, and Flurry) living at the Sanctuary as well. One of his younger siblings, Trinity, passed away when Powder was 2 1/2 years old, and Frost passed away when Powder was almost four years old.
Living Arrangements: Powder lives with two of his sisters, Sugar and Sabine, and one of the Timber pups, Dakota.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, but the combination of being so shy and a double fence makes it hard to see me. If you join a photography tour, I'll give you great photo shots!"
Personality: Powder is one of the shyer kids from the litter, but also one of the most affectionate around people he trusts. He once held the position of alpha in the enclosure, but now that seems to be shifting. He is growing calmer with age, which might be the reason why he lets his sister, Sugar, do most of the disciplining. The only thing Powder wants is to lay his head in the lap of one of his favorite people.
Likes: Ear scratches, standing in his water bucket, and his Daddy Leyton!
Dislikes: Loud noises, sudden movements, and Dakota when he is too obnoxious and doesn't listen.
Fun Fact: When tiny, Powder use to have a gray goatee on his little white body. Arctic wolves are born gray, and turn white with age. His goatee was the last thing that turned white! Now, Powder likes to sport dirt mustaches (like shown below).
My Wishlist: "I have hypothyroidism which means I have to take a medication called Soloxine on a daily basis. It would be a huge help if someone could assure I always have enough Soloxine available."
