History
Romeo was found along the side of the road by a lady when he was two months old, after his mother was hit by a car. The lady kept him until she realized that she couldn't handle him anymore, and called the Department of National Resources. The DNR contacted Fejervary Children's Zoo in Iowa about the red fox, and when he was 4 1/2 months old, he moved to his new home at the zoo. When Romeo was around two years old, the Fejervary Zoo began having trouble with funding and community support. With a plan to relocate the exotics, they called Wild Spirit about four wolves needing a home. When Leyton and Angel arrived at the zoo, they fell in love with the little red fox, and offered to take Romeo if he ever needed a place to go. Later, when the Fejervary Zoo decided to close its doors completely, they called Wild Spirit and asked us to take Romeo. After spending a summer building a special fox enclosure, Romeo was brought to New Mexico and released into his new home.
How Can I Help Romeo?
It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.
Profile
Bio: Romeo is a red fox.
Living Arrangements: Since foxes are solitary creatures, Romeo is perfectly happy living by himself in a roomy enclosure.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, right near the front of the Sanctuary. Unless it is too cold or too hot, I will usually run down to the fence to say hello!"
Personality: Romeo is a frisky little fox! He is extremely social, and he loves to hang out with humans. Although he likes the occasional scratch, he tends to look at humans as play-toys. He loves to run up and tug on articles of clothing, or playfully bite at his caretaker's arms. He doesn't seem to mind being surrounded by wolves, unless one goes for a walk, in which case Romeo will sometimes puff up and scream at the intruder.
Likes: Stuffed animals and tennis balls, volunteers coming in to visit, and peaches.
Dislikes: Humans around his food, vehicles, and people picking him up.
Fun Fact: Since hanging around a sanctuary full of wolves, it seems some wolf habits have rubbed off on Romeo. When Raven walked over to Romeo's enclosure, Romeo puffed up and started to scream at the wolf. All the commotion intrigued the rest of the wolves, and they began to howl about the exchange. Guess Romeo wanted to join in, because he suddenly tried to howl as well! The key word here is 'tried' - what came out instead was a weird, high-pitched screech!
My Wishlist: "A mini pond and stream was built in my enclosure, but during winter, it freezes so it gets shut-down. I heard that it could be run all winter long if we had a 40 gallon high-elevation propane-powered (lp gas) hot water heater...whatever that means..."
