History
Sabine came to Wild Spirit on May 23rd, 2006, with her five siblings: Alice, Powder, Sugar, Thunder, and Storm. Her parents (Yukon and Sierra) and older brother, Axel, joined her in early March of 2007. Sierra came to the Sanctuary pregnant, and so, on May 8th, 2007, Sabine's family was expanded by the birth of five pups: Frost, Flurry, Teton, Shasta, and Trinity. The Arctic family came from a breeder in Oregon, after the Sanctuary had sought out one or two pups to be raised as ambassadors. A friend told us that there was a breeder in Jacksonville, Oregon who may be willing to donate two pups of a recently born litter. A few days before Leyton, Georgia, and 4-year-old Lakota hopped into the car to pick up the pups, the breeder told us to plan on taking all six, as his previous buyers had decided not to purchase the pups. Excited to have the whole litter, the Cougar family picked up the pups and bottle-fed them the whole way back to New Mexico. Sabine was bottle-raised at Wild Spirit. Sabine was only 2 lbs when the rest of the litter was 3 lbs or more. She had great difficulty drinking from a bottle, so her surrogate mom, Angel, would spend many hours holding the nipple at her own lips so Sabine would chew. Sabine grew up to be healthy and extraordinarily affectionate to her original human caretakers.
How Can I Help Sabine?
It takes fifteen sponsors to provide the basic care for each of our wolves and wolf-dogs for an entire year. This does not include the cost of medication, vet visits, enclosures repairs, or enrichment treats.
Profile
Bio: Sabine is an Arctic wolf mixed with a little bit of Timber wolf. Sabine has five other littermates living at the Sanctuary: Alice, Thunder, Powder, Sugar, and Storm. Both of her parents passed away - her mother, Sierra, when Sabine was a year old, and her father, Yukon, a little over two years later. Sabine also has her older brother, Axel, and her younger siblings (Teton, Shasta, and Flurry) living at the Sanctuary as well. One of her younger siblings, Trinity, passed away when Sabine was 2 1/2 years old, and Frost passed away when Sabine was almost four years old.
Living Arrangements: Sabine lives with two of her siblings, Powder and Sugar, and one of the Timber pups, Dakota.
Am I On the Tour Path? "Yes, but two different fences make it hard to see me in the enclosure. If you take a photography tour, however, you'll get great shots of me posing on rocks!"
Personality: Sabine is one of the bravest from her litter, and the most curious around volunteers and strangers. When photography tours enter her enclosure, she sometimes approaches for a sniff or two. Throughout the years, she has been shifting between being dominant and being submissive, so she sometimes likes to test volunteers and her enclosure mates. With people she trusts, she is a big sweetie that just wants ear scratches.
Likes: Playing with Dakota, sleeping on her house, and her Mommy Angel!
Dislikes: Her food stolen from Dakota, her siblings picking on her, and Dakota when he just will not listen!
Fun Fact: When still babies but slightly older, it became too much for all eleven to stay at Angel's trailer. She would take turns bringing a pup or two home, and then return them to their outdoor enclosure in the morning. Most of the pups loved the opportunity to sleep with Momma once again, but Sabine missed the great outdoors. Every night that Angel took Sabine home, at 3:00 am, she would promptly jump up on the sink and begin to howl...and howl, and howl, and howl until Angel took her back outside!
My Wishlist: "When I was smaller, I use to be able to curl up in my water bucket when I got hot. Now...not so much. I would love if we had a pond or a large horse trough to splash in."
