Ishi

Ishi was one of the first rescues brought to our sanctuary. He was owned by a cruel man who beat Ishi up when he refused to get in the car at a trailhead in the Santa Fe Mountains. A woman witnessed this abuse and took Ishi home after he had been abandoned by his owner. Unfortunately, because of Ishi's shy and nervous behavior, he could not be contained in any home and ended up in the Sante Fe Animal Shelter waiting on death row. A woman named Jacqueline, shocked by Ishi's story, fought to save his life by contacting prominent people in the state to help her. She contacted us and we decided to take Ishi.

Ishi had remained a very shy animal due to the cruel past he suffered under his first abusive owner. However, Ishi was very easy-going and was not easily startled. Despite his past, Ishi could have been considered content and peaceful. He was shy towards people, but would come up for a sniff or follow his caretaker around his enclosure. If you tried to pet Ishi, he would recoil back; he did not like any physical affection. Ishi lived with his mate, Osa, before she passed away. Since a wolf named Zoe just lost her mate, the two were put together. Although they appeared distant from one another, Ishi loved Zoe very much and stayed by her side during her final hours. When Zoe passed, Ishi received a wolf, Juneau. The two got along well, but Juneau had been a constant headache for Ishi. She would dig holes for Ishi to fall into, or splash out all of the water in their bucket when Ishi wanted to drink. Ishi, however, took it all with a big grin. One day, however, we woke up to find that Ishi had been paralyzed by a stroke. We tried to give him the best comforts, and the next day, he passed away.

Ishi was a mid-content wolf dog. He passed away at the very old age of nineteen.
