Kamia

Kamia was rescued with another wolf, Maki, from Youngstown, Ohio. They were staying at the Richard E. Flauto Wildlife Foundation, which was quickly inherited by Tiffany Poulton when her fiancé Rich suddenly passed away from a heart attack at age thirty. Tiffany tried to keep her fiancé's dream alive by running the foundation, but she could not receive any funding to keep the place up and running. Unfortunately, she was forced to dissolve the foundation, and Tiffany began to call around to find places for the animals living there. Due to our limited space, we accepted only two of their wolves. Both Kamia and Maki arrived in the spring of 2006.
Kamia, as well as Maki, were both very social at the old foundation; however, the environment they were now in have caused both, especially Kamia, to become more shy. Kamia was also considered the omega in her pack, the only female of two males, which probably maked her even more reserved; in fact, she was considered the shyest animal at the previous foundation. Kamia began to warm to a few volunteers, but still would jump back at any noise or sudden movement. Kamia was, however, very sweet and curious. She moved into a large enclosure with two other animals, Maki and Mr. Cheyenne. Since the girls were pure wolves and Mr. Cheyenne was a high-content wolf dog, they developed the closest thing to a true wolf pack here at the Sanctuary, with, suprisingly, Kamia becoming the Alpha. Unfortunately, Mr. Cheyenne passed away about one month after living with the girls. Although we hoped Kamia and Maki would continue to get along, their grief over Mr. Cheyenne proved too much, and they took their frustrations out on each other. We eventually had to separate the girls, with Kamia awaiting a new mate. Before, however, Kamia could move in with a new mate, she unexpectedly suffered from a neurological illness; most likely a stroke. She lived for three more days before passing peacefully away, to the shock and despair of everyone at the sanctuary.

Kamia was a wolf, part British Columbian wolf and part Arctic wolf. She passed away at the age of six.
