King was raised on a Montana Game Farm where he was used as a model for photographers. Born black with intense energy, silver eyes, and a noble presence, he was one of the most photographed wolves in America. He appeared on calendars, cards, and in books on wolves. At age two, he attacked a keeper who was attempting to remove a cub from King's pen. King was beaten back with a shovel, which caused him to become extremely agressive and had to be sold. He passed through two owners who tried not only to break his spirit, but continue to use him as a photo model and breed him as much as possible. When we had heard that he was being kept in a small 8' x 10' cage by his second owner, we, since we had his son Ammon Ra, approached this man in order to buy King. Thanks to the generosity of both our members and supporters of Wild Spirit, we raised enough money to bring King to our Sanctuary early in 1997. |

King was the perfect example of a wild animal kept in captivity. His spirit was born to run free in the wild, and since he knew it was humans who kept him in enclosures, he hated all people. The abuse he suffered under humans as well did not help the situation at all. King's name fit him perfectly; he was a very noble animal who knew how dangerous he could be. His unbreakable spirit captivated anyone who visited him, and so despite his aggressive nature, he had many admirers. King was given the girl Gaia, and he fell in love with her. Although he was a fearsome man, Gaia was the one in charge, and many times Gaia could be seen grabbing King by the scruff of his neck and pulling him into the bushes for a good scolding. His love for Gaia, however, let her get away with it. King passed away after a long, harsh life, and has finally moved on to where his spirit can run free.
King was a pure Black-phased Timber wolf. He passed away at the age of seventeen. |
