| Before arriving at our sanctuary, Lakota was held in a "high-kill" animal agency. The workers at the sanctuary were afraid of Lakota because they thought he was a wolf and so refused to go in and clean Lakota's cage. At that time, the director from a small humane society received an email from the "high-kill" shelter asking for help in placing many of their animals. When investigated, Lakota was found living in horrible conditions. The director decided to accept Lakota, restore him to good health, and then transport him to a wolf rescue. For the next month Lakota was cared for and loved while he gained weight and grew healthier. The director then contacted us and we accepted responsibility of the wolf-dog. |

Lakota is an extremely shy animal who, so far, has never been touched by a person from the sanctuary. However, Lakota is very curious and will follow his caretakers around his enclosure while they clean. If the caretaker turns around, Lakota will dart off, but begin to watch again from a distance. Lakota loves to play and will turn every-day objects into toys. He has been seen carrying around sticks and stealing the brush used to clean the water buckets. Lakota benefited well from the plushie that was given to him, and he constantly buries it and then digs it back up. Lakota's mate, Natasha, had probably taught him some of his shyness towards people, but Lakota is much braver than his previous mate; Lakota would steal Natasha's food if she was not quick enough. Despite this, in the early morning hours, the two could be seen wrestling and chasing one another. When Natasha passed away, Lakota suffered through a mourning period for his beloved. To ease his pain, we placed him in with another older lady, Waya, at the top of the hill. Lakota greatly enjoys the privacy the back of the Sanctuary as to offer. Unfortunately, Waya passed away as well, and now Lakota is once again by himself.
Lakota is a mid-content wolf dog, possibly a husky mix. |
