Nakota came to Wild Spirit with his mate, Lani, after unfortunate circumstances almost had him euthanized. We learned about his situation through a woman who desperately wanted to see Nakota in a safe place. Nakota went through several different homes, and at one point, was even under the care of the woman who called us. He ended up in a county in Oregon where it was illegal to own a wolf-dog, and after some problems that brought him to the attention of authorities, his current owner was given a week to either find him new placement or have him euthanized. The woman's persistence, passion, and cooperativeness encouraged us, and since we had the room, decided to accept Nakota along with his mate. Originally, Nakota was known as "Lakota", but we changed his name due to the fact we already have an animal Lakota. |

Since coming to the Sanctuary, Nakota has been full of surprises! When he first arrived, Nakota was very shy and tended to stay to himself while his mate Lani pranced around to receive all the attention. However, as he grew more comfortable, he grew more curious and began to gingerly sniff volunteers. Now, as long as you do not make any sudden movements, he will come right up and let you scratch him. The most surprising thing is that now he has begun to nip volunteers! If you do not pay attention to him, or try to leave the enclosure, he will come up and gently bite your leg or butt. He also has a fondness of hair, apparently, after a volunteer relayed her story of Nakota grabbing onto her hair and pulling her over! Nakota, despite this odd behavior, is very sweet and handsome. He has an on-going rivalry with Lani over who gets the human's attention first, and the two will push each other out of the way.
Nakota is a high-content wolf-dog. |
