Timber Wolf Cubs

(The Fweasles)

When the Arctic cubs were six weeks old, five Timber wolf cubs also arrived at the Sanctuary. The Timbers were to be transported to another facility in Ohio, and during the transition, we agreed to board them at our Sanctuary for a week or so. The placement fell through, however, and although we were overwhelmed with six puppies, we ended up accepting responsibility for the five Timbers as well. The Timber wolves were a week older than the Arctics, and thus, larger and lankier. Looking at their oversized ears, different coloration, and differing facial features, Angel began joking that they looked more like fox/weasel crosses than they did like wolves. After discussing with other personnel members about the funny names people give to hybrid crosses, the Timbers began being referred to as The Fweasles, and keeping the two pack names has given us a way to distinguish between the two litters without calling them the brown puppies and the white puppies.

At first, The Fweasles and The Coffee Skunks were separated, the Arctics remaining indoors with Angel, and another volunteer taking care of the Timbers in an outdoor enclosure. However, when we accepted responsibility for the new kids as well, we decided to integrate the two. During an outdoor play session, The Fweasles and The Coffee Skunks (as well as Sierra, a doggy babysitter) were all introduced, and it was immediately loads of fun. That evening, nine of the eleven (minus Sugar and Powder) spent the night in the Animal Care Office with Angel. The next night, all eleven spent the night, at which point Angel decided it was time for a more permanent move outdoors! At eight and nine weeks of age, The Coffee Skunks and The Fweasles became one big happy family.
