Ed. Presentations FAQ

How much do educational presentations cost?
Our educational presentations are priced on the distance we must travel away from the Sanctuary. So, a presentation in Santa Fe, NM, is more expensive than a presentation in Albuquerque, NM. Please contact the outreach coordinator at education@wildspiritwolfsanctuary.org to ask about pricing.

Does the Education team travel to places other than schools or libraries?
Yes. We have spoken at other places such as churches, hobby clubs, and special events, and are always open to new venues.

What age groups does Wild Spirit speak to?
Our Education team has spoken to groups as young as kindergarten to groups of senior citizens. We have also done many presentations to mixed crowds of adults and children.

What is a typical group size for a presentation?
We have spoken to classes of fifteen students to an auditorium of 300 participants. However, a typical group size is between 20 to 40 people, and we prefer groups smaller than 60 if in a classroom or similar setting. A smaller group has a better chance of meeting the ambassador wolf after the presentation.

How long are the presentations?
A typical presentation lasts between 1 hr – 1 ½ hrs, although we can make the presentation shorter or longer depending on your needs.

What do you cover in a presentation?
Our presentations tend to use a question-and-answer format with the audience to cover information. Since each presentation is different, there might be topics we will not cover. However, we tend to typically cover these points:

  • Basic information about the wolf including its diet, hunting strategies, family life, physical adaptations, and pack structure.
  • The difference between wolves and dogs, including physical characteristics and behavioral traits.
  • The difference between wild and domestic animals, as well as why wild animals should not be in a home.
  • Misconceptions about the wolf caused by media portrayal, and old fables and myths.
  • Our Sanctuary, its mission, and how we help captive-bred wolves and wolf-dogs in need.
We can customize our presentation to cover subjects or topics related to class work.

Will a wolf be present, and can the audience interact with the animal?
At each presentation we will bring one of our ambassador wolves to better illustrate the topics covered in the presentation. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to interact with the ambassador as this is determined by which ambassador attends, group size, and time limit.

How many presentations can you do in a day?
The handler and animal can work up to four hours in one day or three presentations for the scheduled price. For us to stay longer, we would need to bring more than one handler and animal, which would mean the price would be doubled.

Can you do a presentation outside?
Yes, although typically, we prefer indoor venues. However, if the weather is agreeable and there are no distractions in the area (playground, outdoor cafeteria seating, etc.), we can present outdoors. For outside presentations, it would be great if a picnic table is available for the animal to stand on.

Is there anything the handlers require before the presentation?
Due to the timid nature of the animals, we would prefer if we could be given a quick access point to the classroom or presentation hall. A teacher or student representative should meet us at the location so the handler and animal do not have to visit the office.

Does the handler prefer if the students are already in the classroom before the animal arrives, or should the students arrive after the animal is in the room?
Our handlers do not have a preference, but there are some considerations for each scenario. If the students are already in the room, they MUST be quite when the animal and handler enter. If the animal is in the room when the children enter, they MUST be file in quietly.

How do you handle payment?
We send an invoice either through mail, email, or fax before the presentation date. Groups can send payment either before the presentation date, or we can pick-up payment the day of the presentation.

Is flash photography allowed?
Yes.

My class is studying a subject/book related to wolves. Can you incorporate the presentation into our lesson plan?
We can work with teachers to discuss certain topics related to class work or lessons. Please let us know ahead of time if there is anything particular you would like us to discuss.

Can we donate items in exchange for the presentation fee?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept donated items in exchange for a discounted or free presentation. However, we encourage that groups set-up fundraisers to help raise the cost of a presentation.
