Greebo

History

Greebo came to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in August 1997 along with his companion, Hooter. Greebo and Hooter lived in Virginia with a loving owner, Carrie, who had bottle-raised both of them. One sad day, Greebo and Hooter happened to be in their backyard along with the landlady's cat (usually the cat and the wolf-dog pair were kept far separated). They killed the cat in front of the landlady, and, distressed, gave their owner five days to find a place for them or else she would have them euthanized. Carrie called us and offered to pay for a small enclosure. We agreed to take them and she brought them to Wild Spirit in the back of her car. Originally, the two were to be boarding animals while Carrie found a new location for herself and the two animals. Unfortunately, she never returned, and so Hooter and Greebo became permanent residents of Wild Spirit.

Rest in Peace
1994 - December 16, 2009

Greebo was an old man with diminishing hip strength. When his hips and spine became worse, we placed him on pain medications for management. Although in good spirits, winter was proving too much for Greebo. His back legs gave out and we began worrying about his quality of life. With heavy hearts, we decided the best decision was to euthanize him. Surrounded by all the staff and volunteers, Greebo passed away.

Profile

Bio: Greebo was a low-content wolf-dog, possibly a pure dog.
Personality: Greebo was a lovable boy that was the happiest when someone was giving him scratches or taking him out for a walk. He frequently would push his long-time companion, Hooter, out of the way so he could receive more attention. Greebo had a frisky side, and when younger, would sometimes harass brand new volunteers. He had a huge appetite for both life and food.
Likes: Fence-fighting, playing chase, and going out for walks.
Dislikes: Being out-witted by volunteers or Hooter, being scolded (which he usually deserved), and Hooter getting more attention.
Fun Fact: Greebo was a great animal to teach new volunteers the basics of animal care. One rule that we teach is to keep gates "dummy-locked" - when the lock is looped through the hole but not clicked shut. The reason? Many of the animals know how to lift latches, and Greebo was one of the best. Many times he taught volunteers the important lesson by lifting the gate latch and letting himself into the sub-enclosure.
